Please do not worry I will try my best to resolve it.

It would be grateful if you can reply to these questions in order to assist you further.

- What changed after the third time to log in?

- Did you encounter the same issue when you created a new administrator account?

Kevin - Answers to your questions as requested:

-  What changed after the third time to log in?

From memory … it was four days ago … I did a Nortons Antivirus "Live Update", did an update of Adobe Acrobat reader, fired up various programs to make sure they still worked. Downloaded but did not install an update for Samsung 'MagicTune' monitor software. Internet Explorer updated Flashplayer via Windows Update

-  Did you encounter the same issue when you created a new administrator account?

Yes

-  Is the computer in the home network or work?

The computer is physically located at home.

However, it was configured as a 'Work' (instead of 'Home') network in 'Network and Sharing Center'

Also, I ran these additional troubleshooting steps, which did not fix the problem:

1/ Nortons Registry cleanup/fixup

2/ SAM database registry key unload/reload using Regedit while booting off a different hard disk.

Regards,

Para Dox

Also ... Moderator ... can you please fixup the title of this post.

In the search results list, it appears as simply 'invalid message'

when it should say:

Invalid message - "The password is incorrect. Try again"

I have found a temporary work-around ..... remove all passwords from all accounts, so that no passwords are required to logon. I can now logon reliably with any account.

This would not be an option if it was my corporate laptop.

Before that, I restored back to Windows 7, and re-installed the Windows 8 Pro upgrade.
I even performed a Nortons registry cleanup on Win7 before I upgraded to Win8.
The same problem re-occurred with a slightly different variation.
This time I could logon intermittently with administrator and other UAC accounts, but not my primary UAC account.

A Google search on "windows the password is incorrect try again" yields 29 million search results. A proportion of these ... 100's of thousands .... if not millions .... would be experiencing the same problem as me, but dismissed as lost/forgotten passwords.

Could you please escalate this problem up through the internal Microsoft technical support hierarchy for resolution.

.... Para Dox

Hi Pada Dox

If you are using language preferences and perhaps have a language preference sensitive character in your password, please have a look at this one.

Did you find a solution in the meantime?

Greetings Marcel

I finally stumbled across the cause of this problem.

I had two languages setup: English Australian (the default) and English UK.

I had an @ in the password, which happens to be the " on the English UK keyboard.

Booting up from scratch there was never a problem. However switching (logging in) as a different user and then switching back, it would toggle the default language over to English UK for some unknown reason and the password would not work because the @ key was now the " key.

To fix, I deleted English UK because didn't really need it, however this appears to me to be a bug the Microsoft should fix.
